Karen, a key point to Jones' argument was that it cannot be replicated
because there is nothing to replicate. The original data and methods
have "disappeared." Plus, it's unclear how various elements of the pyramid
could be isolated for a proper study. And there's simply better
cognitive science out there to tell us how humans actually learn.

I'm repeating myself, but I think it's important: the learning pyramid supports teachers' confirmation bias. The result is a grab-bag of ill-considered practices that do not enhance learning.

Try this analysis: http://bit.ly/u5omtG

I'm sorry that I don't have better targets for my condescension. This is bad science, and it ought not be the basis of anyone's pedagogy.

Hi Folks,
Thanks for your contributions to this blog. There certainly was a great deal of energy and passion in many responses! EllsLewis you're absolutely right that this would be a relatively easy issue to study. I hope that will be done. In the meantime, I'm going to continue to use the pyramid, with all appropriate disclaimers in place and, I suspect, will continue to find that it resonates for many teachers. If it does that and encourages people to move toward a more active and constructivist teaching stance, I don't see any harm.

Hi Folks,
Thanks for chipping in with your perspectives on teacher bullies. I've read some research that says the happiest people in the world are those who feel a sense of purpose in their work. If we stay focused on the sense of purpose that brought most of us to teaching maybe the bullies will lose their power to influence.
